Coaching a Rover Team

Strophurus Solutions is currently coaching a high school team!
A good friend of mine teaches STEM at a high school in Germany. He came across a competition by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and decided to sign up with three motivated students. The Summer School Vulcano 2025 invites high school students to design and build their own rovers for navigating the rugged terrain of the Italian island Vulcano. Certainly a tough challenge to solve with less than two month to build the robot, design a poster and write a report. These are the specifications for the robot:

  • Must fit within a 35 x 25 x 25 cm box
  • Battery-operated with remote control capabilities
  • Navigate sandy, dusty, and rocky surfaces
  • Ability to collect and transport a rock sample

I offered to help the team with respect to embedded development and the selection of suitable components for the rover. So far, they have qualified for phase two and are now in the middle of building their rover. We had a call recently and successfully solved some issues with servo motor control. It’s nice to get back into embedded systems again.

End of April, the winners will be chosen and three teams get to go to Volcano with their rovers. Wishing them the best of luck and hoping for their success!
